Hamish Ford: "On Australia Day in Canberra this year two stark effects of an intertwined political and mainstream media narrative were revealed. First, that protests, no matter how small, are increasingly portrayed as security threats. Second, the way the events were relayed at the time and then over ensuing days illustrates how historical and ongoing Indigenous disadvantage — despite being an international scandal — is treated here with a mix of dishonest platitudinal concern and "move-on" belligerence."

Excellent article by Hamish Ford. Some additional points below.

1. Expenditure on Aboriginal Health is about the same for Indigenous Australians as for Australians in general (currently about $3,000 per head pa; WHO states: "Total expenditure on health per capita (Intl $, 2009) 3,382": http://www.who.int/countries/aus/en/ ). However many Indigenous Australians live in Third World conditions, 20% have diabetes, the life expectancy gap between Aborigines and White Australians is about 17 years ... and it is estimated that Aboriginal Health is underfunded 3-fold i.e. is under-funded by about $2 billion pa, roughly the same amount that will be saved pa by means testing the rebate on private health insurance).

2. Actual failure in "national security" is surely measured in terms of actual "violent deaths" of Australians or of actual "non-violent avoidable deaths" of Australians due to imposed deprivation or other obscene, dangerous public policy. The neocon, pro-war, pro-Zionist, pro-US Liberal-National Party and neocon, pro-war, pro-Zionist, pro-US Labor (aka the Lib-Labs) can be seen as huge threats to Australian "national security":

(a) The annual death rate is 2.2% for Aborigines and 2.4% for Aborigines in the Northern Territory as compared to 2.55 for Australian sheep in Australian paddocks. The avoidable death rate is 1.8% for Australian Aborigines, 2.0% for Aborigines in the Northern Territory as compared to 1.0% for non-Arab Africa i.e. 9,000 Indigenous Australians die avoidably each year out of an Indigenous population of 0.5 million in one of the richest countries in the World - compare this with the circa 5,000 reported to have been killed in the last year in the UK-, US, France- , EU- and Australia-backed Syrian civil war (Google "Aboriginal Genocide").

(b). Each year about 3,000 Australians are killed by alcohol and 16,000 by tobacco, deadly drugs subsidzed by successive Lib-Lab Governments and which are devastating for Indigenous Australians in particular, notably because of the impact on diabetics. Unlike the traitorous racist Lib-Labs, decent people are anti-racist and non-racist and would no doubt support a blanket prohibition of alcohol and tobacco in the Northern Territory, Northern WA, Northern SA and Northern Queensland in an attempt to cut the horrendous Aboriginal morbidity and mortality (see Thomson, N., Burns, J., Burrow, S & Kirov, E. (2004), Overview of indigenous health 2004. http://archive.healthinfonet.ecu.edu.au/html/html_bulletin/bull_44/reviews/thomson/reviews_thomson_1.htm ).

(c) Each year Australia spends about $3 billion on the War on Terrorism, about half of this in the Afghan War (see "Terror fight costs $30 billion", The Age, 11 September 2011: http://www.theage.com.au/national/terror-fight-costs-30-billion-20110910-1k3ez.html ) that has been associated with opiate drug-related deaths of 3,600 Australians (200,000 Americans, 18,000 British and 1 million people worldwide) due to US Alliance restoration of the Taliban-destroyed Afghan opium industry from 6% of world share in 2001 to over 90% today (Google "Afghan Holocaust" and "Afghan Genocide").

(d) Each year an estimated 10,000 Australians die from the effects of carbon burning pollutants under the pro-coal, pro-gas, pro-oil, pro-logging, anti-environment, climate criminal, war criminal, racist, genocidal, pro-Zionist, pro-US imperialism , pro-war, neocon Lib-Labs , the breakdown being about 5,000 (coal burning for power), 2,000 (car exhaust) and 3,000 (other burning, excluding bushfires) .

According to ABC News today "But the tape shows [union boss] Ms Sattler tell embassy member Barbara Shaw that "Abbott's just made a statement to the press that the Tent Embassy should be pulled down". Ms Shaw then repeats what she was told to the crowd, and other activists call on those gathered to move towards the restaurant. "Our deputy prime minister (sic) Tony Abbott is over there and he's just made a statement to the press that the Tent Embassy should be pulled down," she says" (see "Video emerges of union boss at Tent Embassy protest", ABC News, 15 February 2012: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-02-14/video-captures-sattler27s-words-to-australia-day-protesters/3830160 ). And of course if there had been a real threat to the MPs the police should have secured and used the back door.
